Strengthening Healthcare in Morocco: New Facilities Open in Rural Areas

Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, accompanied by the Minister of Health and Social Protection, the Wali of the Marrakech-Safi region, the Governor of Marrakech, and several local stakeholders, has overseen the continuation of the program to enhance primary healthcare institutions across Morocco. This comprehensive initiative involves the reconstruction, modernization, and equipping of 1,400 health centers throughout various provinces in the kingdom. On Saturday, the services of the Ait Ourir proximity hospital and the second-level rural health center in Tizart were inaugurated in the Al Haouz province.

During the inauguration, the Prime Minister emphasized that the opening of these two facilities aligns with efforts to strengthen the healthcare offering and advance the national health system. This initiative reflects the royal directives aimed at completing the governmental program designed to rehabilitate primary healthcare institutions, thereby improving infrastructure and health services, and making them more accessible to citizens. Additionally, there is a strong focus on enhancing medical equipment and training healthcare personnel to ensure better quality of care and achieve spatial justice, particularly in remote areas.

The Ait Ourir proximity hospital has been built on an expansive area of over 30,000 square meters, featuring a capacity of 45 beds and a total funding of 85 million dirhams. It will provide a wide range of services, including obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, cardiology, dentistry, general surgery, radiology, medical analyses, and hospital care, catering to a population of 278,000 residents spread across 16 municipalities.

This new center is equipped with various facilities, including a reception area, waiting room, medical consultation rooms, treatment and vaccination areas, as well as a basic examination and diagnosis room. It also comprises a maternal and child health unit, a fully-equipped delivery room with a dedicated space for newborn care, a pharmacy, and areas for sterilization, storage, sanitation, and additional health facilities.

To ensure that these healthcare facilities adhere to high-quality standards, they have been outfitted with modern biomedical equipment, enabling them to provide essential services to the community. As we see improvements in the healthcare system's infrastructure, the government must maintain its momentum by focusing on further enhancement of patient reception and appointment scheduling.

This initiative represents a significant step towards reinforcing the healthcare system and making services more accessible to citizens, especially in rural areas. Such programs should not marginalize rural regions in the healthcare reform process, as the progress in health centers is often more pronounced in urban areas than in the countryside.

In conclusion, the opening of these healthcare institutions marks a vital contribution towards alleviating the pressure on major hospitals and improving the quality of services provided. The commitment to invest in healthcare symbolizes an investment in the well-being of the population, reflecting the government's prioritization of health reforms. Moreover, providing multiple specialties at the proximity hospital will ease the lives of citizens and reduce the need for travel to larger cities for medical care.
