Strengthening International Security: Spain and Morocco's Anti-Terrorism Collaboration

Enhancing Security Through International Collaboration

Since 2014, the partnership between Spain and Morocco's General Directorate of National Security (DGST) has led to the apprehension of 150 individuals involved in jihadist terrorism-related offenses. This close operational relationship has positioned Morocco as a key ally in Spain's security strategy aimed at neutralizing jihadist threats. The collaboration, characterized by mutual trust and information sharing, has facilitated 31 joint anti-terrorism operations, resulting in the arrest of individuals across both nations—83 in Spain and 67 in Morocco, demonstrating a coordinated response to terrorism.

One notable operation occurred recently in Palma, Mallorca, where a highly radicalized individual was arrested as they planned to travel to a conflict zone to engage in jihad. This arrest was executed in conjunction with the DGST, which simultaneously detained two other extremists in Morocco. The individual detained in Spain was suspected of being involved in terrorist indoctrination and was known to disseminate content from the terrorist organization DAESH on social media, furthering the indoctrination of others. Additionally, the detainee had expressed intentions to travel to conflict areas to participate in jihadist activities.

The initiative to combat terrorism began with the first joint operation on March 14, 2014, known as Operation Azteca, which resulted in the arrest of eight individuals from five different nationalities, disrupting one of the largest networks facilitating the movement of jihadists to Syria and the Sahel region. The ongoing cooperation highlights the effectiveness of this alliance, with the most recent operation reflecting the continued commitment of both nations to ensure national security against significant threats.
