Strengthening Military Collaboration: The U.S. and Morocco's Drone Training Initiative

U.S. and Africa Join Forces for Advanced Drone Training

On March 22, during the 13th African Land Forces Summit (ALFS) held in Rome, General Christopher Donahue, the commander of the U.S. Army Europe and Africa, announced an ambitious two-phase project aimed at enhancing drone training across the African continent. The immediate phase will see the introduction of a pilot training module for drones, which is set to be integrated into the multinational African Lion 2026 exercise scheduled to take place from April 20 to May 8 in Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, and Ghana. This training module will be limited to 16 participants, split into two courses of eight individuals. The first segment of the training will focus on the integration of drone planning into military operations over a span of eight days, while the second segment will provide practical flight experience across four different drone systems over ten days.

Looking ahead, the long-term objective is to establish a permanent regional training center in Morocco, with plans for replication in other areas across the continent. General Donahue emphasized the need for a problem-solving approach, incorporating cultural awareness, intelligence, and a deep understanding of the local environment. The initiative aims not only to train drone operators but also to develop trainers who can impart their knowledge within their respective countries, thereby multiplying the impact of the training program.

Colonel William Daniel, the director of security cooperation at the Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF), elaborated on the initiative's ambition to align operational challenges faced in the field with practical, proven, and scalable solutions derived from the private sector. This strategic collaboration underscores the commitment to strengthening military capabilities and enhancing regional security in Africa through innovative training solutions.
