Joint Drone Training Enhances Military Capabilities
The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces and the Utah National Guard have recently engaged in a significant joint training exercise focused on Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (SUAS) in Agadir, Morocco. This collaboration highlights the evolving role of drones in modern military operations and underscores the commitment of both nations to enhance their defense capabilities through innovative technology.
This training initiative saw the participation of various U.S. military entities, including the Combined Arms Training Center and the 7th Army Training Command, based at U.S. Army Garrison Vilseck in Germany. The primary aim was to cultivate skilled UAS operators and instructors while fostering improved interoperability and information sharing between U.S. and Moroccan military forces. Lt. Col. Corbett Baxter from the Southern European Task Force – Africa emphasized the importance of such exercises, stating, “Events like this give us an opportunity to take an emerging capability and turn it into something our forces can actually use.” He further explained that training alongside Moroccan partners builds interoperability and facilitates the integration of unmanned systems into broader military operations, thereby enhancing the overall effectiveness and lethality of the forces.
Building Drone Expertise for Enhanced Defense
For the Utah National Guard, this engagement is a pivotal step in developing a nascent drone program aimed at bolstering capabilities for homeland defense. Additionally, it serves as a valuable opportunity to collaborate with active-duty counterparts and Moroccan allies. Course participant Sergent-chef Mohammed Idamr from the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces shared his insights on the training, stating, “The SUAS training provided us with essential knowledge and practical skills including drone piloting, mission planning, meteorology, safety, and instruction.” He noted that the training not only deepened their understanding of the role of SUAS in military missions but also enhanced situational awareness and improved the tactical deployment of drones within the Armed Forces.
This training event exemplifies a concerted effort involving U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), CATC, the 7th Army Training Command, and U.S. Army Garrison Vilseck, alongside the Utah National Guard and the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces.
