The military partnership between Morocco and India continues to deepen, with significant developments taking place during the inaugural meeting of the Joint Defense Committee (JDC) currently underway in New Delhi. This meeting signifies a pivotal moment in the strategic rapprochement between Rabat and New Delhi, as both nations aim to bolster their defense cooperation. The Moroccan delegation, led by Brigadier General Abdellah Athmani, is engaging in discussions that reflect the two countries’ commitment to reinvigorating a partnership that has notably strengthened over recent years.
On September 8, 2026, the first Joint Defense Committee meeting was held, marking a renewed impetus for military collaboration as the two nations approach the 70th anniversary of their bilateral relations in 2027. The agenda covered various topics of mutual interest, including military training and education, peacekeeping operations, joint military exercises, medical cooperation, cyber defense, and defense industries. Both parties expressed their desire to further deepen their ties in these critical areas.
The meeting was co-chaired by Amitabh Prasad, the Joint Secretary for International Cooperation at the Indian Ministry of Defense, alongside Brigadier General Abdellah Athmani, head of the Second Bureau of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces. The Indian delegation comprised representatives from the Defense Department, all three branches of the armed forces, the Integrated Defense Staff, the Defense Production Department, the General Directorate of Medical Services of the Armed Forces, the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), and the Ministry of External Affairs.
In a regional context characterized by the reconfiguration of defense partnerships and the emergence of new strategic alliances, the Kingdom of Morocco has chosen to enhance its military cooperation with India, which has become one of its key partners in Asia in this domain. The Moroccan delegation's visit to India, scheduled from September 7 to 10, 2026, commenced with a tribute paid by Brigadier General Abdellah Athmani to fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial in New Delhi.
Moreover, the Moroccan delegation engaged with representatives from the defense industry at DPSU Bhawan, gaining firsthand insights into India's growing capabilities in military equipment production. The two sides agreed to explore avenues for cooperation in co-production, joint ventures, technological collaborations, as well as maintenance and logistical support.
The delegation is also set to visit the Indian Army's Military Research and Referral Hospital to gain an understanding of the country’s capabilities in military medicine. This meeting of the Joint Defense Committee follows a Memorandum of Understanding on defense cooperation signed during Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh's visit to Morocco in September 2025, which provided a new impetus to bilateral defense relations. The Joint Defense Committee meeting is part of the institutional mechanism established under this Memorandum of Understanding.
It is noteworthy that military cooperation between Morocco and India has significantly strengthened in recent years. This momentum is exemplified by the establishment of Tata Advanced Systems in Berrechid, where military vehicles "Made in Morocco" are now produced, showcasing the strategic partnership's growth between Rabat and New Delhi.
