Revitalizing Global Cooperation
During the 50th Annual Meeting of Foreign Ministers from G77 member states and China, held under Uruguay's presidency and themed "The Global South and the Future of Multilateralism," Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita emphasized the pressing crisis facing the multilateral system. He pointed out its current ineffectiveness and the growing distrust among nations, particularly due to its inadequacy in addressing both existing and emerging global challenges. In this context, Bourita advocated for an operational multilateralism that can convert commitments into tangible solutions, projects, and investments, while simultaneously strengthening partnerships, synergies, and regulatory co-construction between Northern and Southern countries.
Bourita asserted that Southern nations should not merely be consumers of solutions but also producers of innovative ideas, initiatives, and norms. He highlighted the necessity for these countries to transform their demographic, economic, and numerical strengths into influential capacities and proactive contributions to global discussions. Referring to Morocco's commitment, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, towards South-South cooperation grounded in solidarity and co-development, the minister pointed out various significant initiatives. Notable among these are the African Atlantic Pipeline project, the Atlantic Initiative aimed at enhancing Sahelian states' access to the Atlantic Ocean, and the Rabat Process concerning Atlantic African countries.
Bourita further underscored that the revitalization of multilateralism hinges on bolstering cooperation mechanisms as well as the production and innovation capabilities of Southern nations. This enhancement is essential for enabling them to fully participate in global governance. The annual meeting concluded with the participation of ministers and high representatives from G77+China countries, culminating in the adoption of a comprehensive ministerial declaration.
