NATO and Morocco Discuss Enhanced Security Collaboration

On October 6 and 7, 2026, Javier Colomina, NATO's Special Representative for the Southern Neighborhood, visited Rabat, Morocco to explore avenues for bolstering the collaboration between Morocco and the NATO alliance. As outlined in a NATO statement released on October 8, this marks Colomina's third official visit to Morocco, where he engaged with senior officials from the Moroccan ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, and Royal Armed Forces. The discussions centered around enhancing the longstanding partnership between NATO and Morocco, a relationship that has evolved over three decades of cooperation.

The talks not only focused on deepening ties but also addressed pressing issues in North Africa and the Sahel, including common security challenges such as terrorism, maritime security, and emerging threats. Colomina emphasized the importance of Morocco as a key partner in the region, stating, "Our cooperation can only grow stronger from here." Morocco has been a participant in NATO's Mediterranean Dialogue since 1994, being the first country to sign a tailored partnership program that specifies its areas of collaboration with the alliance.

During his visit, Colomina also participated in a conference on small arms and light weapons, jointly organized by Morocco and NATO. This event marked the first regional conference on the topic involving partner countries, aligning with the NATO Southern Neighborhood Action Plan that was approved during the Washington summit in 2024. Such initiatives underline the commitment of both NATO and Morocco to address security concerns and foster a collaborative environment in the region.
