U.S. Special Forces Collaborate with Moroccan Armed Forces in Critical Training Exercises
In a significant display of military cooperation, the 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne) joined forces with the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces’ Groupement des Forces Spéciales (GFS) to successfully complete a Joint Combined Exchange Training (JCET) in May 2026. This multi-week training program was conducted near Tifnit and Agadir, Morocco, and aimed to enhance Morocco’s readiness to tackle emerging security threats while reinforcing the strong defense partnership between Morocco and the United States.
The JCET is designed to bolster operational readiness by pairing U.S. and Moroccan forces at an operational schoolhouse, where they engaged in rigorous training that included Fast Rope Insertion and Extraction System (FRIES) operations. The culmination of this training involved a comprehensive exercise that encompassed mission planning, infiltration, raids, and exfiltration tactics. According to the team leader of the 19th SFG(A), the ability to execute fast rope insertions is essential for offensive operations in urban settings, particularly where obstacles may limit movement. The training not only highlighted the operational capabilities of the GFS but also demonstrated their proficiency in coordinating joint operations with various military units in the region.
This collaborative effort was pivotal in enhancing small-unit tactics, marksmanship, and special reconnaissance skills, ultimately preparing both forces to effectively address a spectrum of security challenges. Morocco's active role in maintaining regional security underscores its position as a reliable and strategic partner. Maj. Jared L. Sorensen, a bilateral affairs officer with the Utah National Guard State Partnership Program, remarked on the importance of the long-standing relationships fostered over years of collaboration. He noted that such engagements facilitate knowledge exchange, improve interoperability, and strengthen the trust that has defined the U.S.-Morocco Special Operations Forces partnership for more than two decades.
JCETs serve as a cornerstone of the U.S. Special Operations Command Africa's (SOCAFRICA) strategy, focusing on partnerships that enhance readiness and support security cooperation throughout the region. These training exercises not only ensure that military forces remain prepared but also affirm the commitment to collective security amid evolving global challenges.
