Strengthening Ties: Kenya and Morocco Sign 11 Bilateral Agreements

Kenya and Morocco Forge Stronger Relations with New Agreements

In a significant step towards enhancing bilateral relations, Kenya has recently signed eleven comprehensive agreements with Morocco during a ceremony held in Nairobi on April 9, 2026. These agreements span a diverse range of sectors including agriculture, justice, health, maritime fishing, aquaculture, gender equality, women's empowerment, cultural cooperation, higher education, sports, wildlife conservation, and visa exemptions for diplomatic and official passports. Additionally, a framework agreement was established to facilitate the provision of scholarships, internships, and the sharing of expertise between the two nations.

During the joint commission meeting, Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed a strong conviction that this renewed joint commission symbolizes a vital opportunity for bolstering cooperation between the two countries. He highlighted the optimistic outlook for the future of Moroccan-Kenyan relations, emphasizing the potential for significant advancements in the coming years.

Moreover, the Kenyan government reaffirmed its support for Morocco's autonomy plan concerning the Sahara, acknowledging the momentum generated by King Mohammed VI’s leadership. This supportive stance aligns with a growing international trend, evidenced by the establishment of over 30 consulates in the southern provinces and the backing of various countries for Morocco’s initiative.

Musalia Mudavadi, the Chief of the Presidential Cabinet in Kenya, commented on the importance of private sector collaboration between the two nations, indicating that the financial markets of South Africa, Morocco, Kenya, and Egypt are pivotal centers for capital markets in Africa. He stressed that the commitment shown by the leadership of both countries is crucial for achieving better outcomes and fostering robust economic ties.

The agreements not only reflect the diplomatic endeavors of both nations but also signify a notable economic rapprochement. As of 2024, the trade volume between Kenya and Morocco was estimated to be around $80.4 million, underscoring the growing economic interdependence and partnership between the two countries. Both governments are optimistic that these agreements will pave the way for a collaborative future, enhancing trade and fostering mutual development.
