Morocco and India Strengthen Defense Relations with New Committee
In a significant development aimed at enhancing bilateral relations, Morocco and India have initiated a Joint Defense Committee (JDC) during a meeting held in New Delhi on September 8, 2026. The JDC was co-chaired by Brigadier General Abdellah Athmani, the Chief of the Second Bureau of the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces, and Amitabh Prasad, the Joint Secretary for International Cooperation at India’s Ministry of Defense. Their discussions spanned a wide array of topics, including military training, peacekeeping operations, medical cooperation, cyber defense, and advancements in defense industries. Notably, both parties expressed interest in fostering co-production and joint ventures, hinting at a shift towards industrial and technological collaboration that transcends traditional military ties.
As part of the Moroccan delegation's visit to India from September 7 to 10, officials toured the Defense Public Sector Undertakings (DPSU) Bhawan in New Delhi. This visit aimed to familiarize them with India's burgeoning defense manufacturing sector, showcasing the potential for future partnerships. The establishment of the JDC follows a memorandum of understanding on defense cooperation that was signed during Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Morocco in September 2025, which laid the groundwork for enhanced cooperation between the two nations' defense establishments.
The formation of this committee is particularly timely, as Morocco and India are set to commemorate the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2027. Both nations have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding defense partnerships, with discussions indicating a mutual desire to broaden the scope of cooperation in light of the upcoming milestone.
