The military partnership between Morocco and India is entering a new phase of enhancement, exemplified by the inaugural meeting of the Joint Defense Committee (JDC) currently taking place in New Delhi. On September 8, 2026, this first meeting of the JDC was convened, coinciding with the forthcoming 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Morocco and India in 2027. The agenda included various topics aimed at bolstering bilateral cooperation in defense, indicating a mutual desire to invigorate a partnership that has significantly developed over recent years. Key areas of discussion encompassed military training and education, peacekeeping operations, joint military exercises, medical cooperation, cyber defense, and defense industries, all critical sectors for both nations.
Strategic Discussions and Future Collaborations
The discussions were co-chaired by Amitabh Prasad, the Joint Secretary for International Cooperation at the Indian Ministry of Defense, and Brigadier General Abdellah Athmani, head of the second bureau of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces. The Indian delegation comprised representatives from the Defense Ministry, all three military branches, integrated defense staff, the Department of Defense Production, the medical services of the armed forces, the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), and the Ministry of External Affairs.
The Moroccan delegation's visit to India is scheduled from September 7 to 10, 2026. Brigadier General Abdellah Athmani commenced his trip by paying homage to fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. Furthermore, the delegation engaged with representatives from the defense industry at DPSU Bhawan, aiming to gain direct insights into India's growing military equipment production capabilities. Both parties agreed to explore avenues for collaboration in co-production, joint ventures, technological partnerships, as well as maintenance and logistical support.
Additionally, the delegation plans to visit the Indian Army's Military Research and Referral Hospital to gain an understanding of the country’s military medicine capabilities. A memorandum of understanding regarding defense cooperation was signed during the visit of Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh to Morocco in September 2025, a visit that revitalized bilateral defense relations. This Joint Defense Committee meeting is part of the institutional mechanism established by this memorandum, further solidifying the military ties between Morocco and India.
It is noteworthy that military cooperation between Morocco and India has significantly strengthened in recent years, highlighted by the establishment of Tata Advanced Systems in Berrechid, where military vehicles 'Made in Morocco' are now produced, showcasing the growing strategic partnership between Rabat and New Delhi.
