Morocco and India Enhance Collaboration on Water Resources
In a significant development for international cooperation in water resource management, Morocco and India have taken steps to deepen their collaboration in this vital area. This initiative was highlighted during the sixth meeting of their joint working group focused on water resources, conducted in New Delhi, which coincided with India's ninth International Water Week from September 22 to 26, 2026. The purpose of this meeting was to explore and reinforce the existing framework of cooperation established under a memorandum of understanding that was signed in December 2017, which has laid the groundwork for sharing expertise and best practices in water management over recent years.
During the meeting, Moroccan representatives presented their extensive experience in various aspects of water resource management, including dam operations, groundwater resource sustainability, and strategies to mitigate the impacts of flooding and droughts. They specifically drew from their successful practices in managing the Moulouya river basin, recognized as one of the most thoroughly monitored watersheds in Morocco. On the other hand, the Indian delegation shared insights into their advancements in modernizing irrigation systems, effective management of groundwater and dams, and the training initiatives designed to bolster capacity within the water sector.
Both nations expressed a strong commitment to continue implementing the provisions of the 2017 memorandum of understanding, with plans underway for the seventh meeting of the joint working group, the date of which has yet to be determined. This ongoing collaboration underscores the mutual benefits that can be derived from sharing knowledge and resources in addressing water-related challenges, which are increasingly critical in the face of climate change and growing populations.
