A recent report sheds light on the alarming rise of anti-migrant rhetoric in Morocco, revealing that organized online communities are increasingly disseminating narratives steeped in fear and misinformation. According to the MigraPress Barometer, these communities portray migrants as societal threats, contributing to a hostile digital environment. The report, titled "From Polarization to Normalization: Mapping Morocco’s Anti-Migrant Digital Ecosystem," analyzes 863 posts across popular platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok during April and May 2026. The findings indicate that a staggering 76.4% of these posts contained hate speech, discriminatory content, or incitement to violence, illustrating the pervasive nature of online hate directed at Sub-Saharan migrants.
Furthermore, the report highlights that 72.4% of the analyzed content exhibited medium to high emotional intensity, with anger and fear being the predominant emotions. This emotional engagement is crucial, as it significantly influences how these narratives spread. The research also uncovered that 65.1% of the posts included false, misleading, or unverified information, often employed to bolster negative portrayals of migrants. The most extreme content, particularly posts calling for violence or framing migrants within a security context, garnered the highest levels of interaction, indicating that sensationalism amplifies engagement in these discussions.
The Role of Emotion in Amplifying Anti-Migrant Narratives
Interestingly, the study reveals that emotionally charged posts are more likely to achieve viral status compared to those that merely contain misinformation. This suggests that emotional appeals are highly effective in propagating anti-migrant narratives online. Security and crime are central themes in this discourse, appearing in nearly 40% of the content analyzed. In stark contrast, counter-narratives advocating for inclusion or disputing misinformation remain significantly less visible, failing to counterbalance the dominance of hostile rhetoric. This imbalance contributes to the normalization of discrimination against migrants in Morocco, signaling a troubling trend that requires urgent attention.
