Over 1,500 Migrants Arrive in Ceuta Amid Rising Tensions
The recent arrival of over 1,500 migrants within a matter of days in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has triggered alarm among local authorities. According to the newspaper El País, approximately 120 military personnel are now involved in this effort. Pedro Sánchez, the Prime Minister, indicated earlier that all necessary measures are being undertaken to address the situation in Ceuta, although he did not provide specific details on the government's response.
Government and Opposition Response to the Migrant Crisis
Opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo from the conservative People's Party (PP) described the circumstances as a "desperate situation," criticizing Sánchez’s government for allegedly ignoring what he termed a national security crisis. According to RTVE, the Ministry of the Interior has dismissed the possibility of declaring a state of emergency, noting that migration movements do not fall under the risks outlined by the national civil protection system.
Spain and Morocco have reportedly agreed to enhance their cooperation in managing migration flows, with plans to expedite the return of individuals who have entered Ceuta illegally. The recent surge in migrant arrivals, many of whom have swum to the enclave, has severely strained local reception facilities, prompting the Regional President Juan Jesús Vivas to announce that hundreds of migrants are currently forced to sleep on the streets.

Relations between Spain and Morocco began to improve in 2022, following Sánchez's endorsement of Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara as a viable solution.
Speculation is now rife regarding whether recent events are linked to Sánchez's recent trip to Algeria. The longstanding conflict between Morocco and Algeria over Western Sahara may have influenced Morocco to relax its border controls in a potential political maneuver aimed at Madrid.
