Surreal May Snowfall Blankets Oukaïmeden in Morocco

Unexpected Snowfall Transforms Oukaïmeden into a Winter Wonderland

In an astonishing meteorological event, Oukaïmeden has awoken under a blanket of snow this May, following an unusual influx of cold air and storms sweeping across the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, which resulted in winter-like scenes that are capturing the attention of social media users worldwide. The ski resort, typically associated with springtime activities, was transformed into a picturesque winter landscape reminiscent of January, with snow accumulations visible even at the base of the slopes. This unexpected snowfall has left both locals and mountain enthusiasts in awe of the dramatic change in weather conditions.

The phenomenon unfolded over the past weekend, attributed to several storm systems that moved across Morocco. According to the Moroccan General Directorate of Meteorology, a mass of cold air settled over the western Mediterranean and northern regions of the country, coinciding with moist air currents from the Atlantic. The interplay of these elements fostered the development of active storms, which were accompanied by intense precipitation and snowfall at higher altitudes.

At Oukaïmeden, located over 2,600 meters above sea level in the High Atlas, approximately 10 centimeters of snow were recorded at lower elevations, while higher areas saw accumulations of up to 12 centimeters. However, strong wind gusts led to irregular snow deposits, with some locations experiencing depths nearing half a meter. This rare weather event has not only impacted Oukaïmeden but has also blanketed other mountains in Morocco, such as Mount Mouriq and the summit of Amzri Imi N’Oulaoun, restoring winter landscapes after several weeks of mild temperatures that had given the area a summery feel.

Despite the unusual timing of this snowfall, Moroccan meteorologists remind us that such occurrences are not unprecedented during the spring months. May can still witness clashes between cold air masses from the north and warm air rising from the Sahara, particularly in high-altitude mountain systems like the Atlas. As the weather remains unstable in certain mountainous regions for the next few hours, forecasts suggest a gradual atmospheric stabilization is on the horizon. The arrival of the Azores High is expected to contribute to a slow rise in temperatures, ushering in a return to much warmer conditions across much of Morocco.
