Arrest of Suspected Drug Mule at Tenerife Airport
The Spanish authorities have apprehended a suspected drug mule at Tenerife South Airport, who had just arrived from Agadir, Morocco. Upon inspection, law enforcement officials discovered that the individual was carrying 79 capsules filled with hashish, totaling nearly 900 grams of the substance. This incident raises significant concerns regarding the increasing drug trafficking activities between Morocco and Spain.
The arrest occurred during a routine border control check when the man’s unusual behavior attracted the attention of the officers. Following this, he was subjected to a medical examination which confirmed the presence of narcotics concealed within his body. Subsequently, he was taken to a local hospital where medical professionals, under supervision, extracted the 79 capsules containing cannabis resin from him, amounting to a total of 880 grams. Spanish police have yet to disclose any information regarding the suspect's identity or nationality.
According to Spanish security services, this case reflects a larger trend of renewed activity in the hashish smuggling routes between Morocco and Spain. After a noticeable decline in interception rates in 2023 and 2024, authorities are now observing an uptick in smuggling attempts. While the majority of hashish trafficking still occurs via maritime routes, smugglers are increasingly utilizing commercial flights. The method of transporting drugs in swallowed capsules is considered one of the most common tactics employed to evade security checks.
