Caroline Sturdza and Natalie Armbrüster Achieve Remarkable Double Victory
The opening event of the Swiss women's golf season has proven to be a spectacular success, as Caroline Sturdza and Natalie Armbrüster claimed an impressive double victory at the Madaef Golfs Ladies Open, part of the LET Access Series held in Morocco. Sturdza, a 23-year-old golfer from Geneva, secured her first title on this second-tier European tour with an overall score of -7. Having transitioned to the professional circuit only last year from her collegiate career at Stanford, Sturdza showcased remarkable composure during the final round of the tournament. Despite facing a temporary setback against Denmark's Cecilie Leth-Nissen and encountering two early bogeys on holes 4 and 5, she remained unfazed and focused on her game.
Sturdza turned the tide in her favor with crucial birdies on holes 7, 9, and 16, culminating in a strong finish on the 18th green that sealed her victory by a narrow margin of one stroke over Armbrüster. Leth-Nissen, who had been in contention, ultimately finished in third place. For Natalie Armbrüster, the 26-year-old from Schönenberg, victory was tantalizingly close but just out of reach, particularly due to a double bogey on the fourth hole during the final round. Nevertheless, she displayed her prowess by playing the remaining 14 holes five under par.
At one point, a purely Swiss playoff seemed imminent, but Sturdza's decisive birdie on the final hole thwarted that possibility. After her victory, an elated Sturdza expressed her pride, stating, "I am very proud and happy that my hard work is paying off. My goal was to see if I was on the right track. I managed to stay focused throughout the week and play in the moment – that made all the difference." Notably, both Sturdza (scores of 71, 68, 70) and Armbrüster (scores of 72, 69, 69) were the only players in the field to finish all three rounds at par or better.
The Swiss delegation showcased promising form overall, with Tiffany Arafi finishing in a tie for 18th place, while Priscilla Schmid concluded the tournament in a tie for 37th place. This strong start to the season sends a powerful message regarding the depth and quality of Swiss women's golf.
