Swissport International Acquires Swiftair Maroc to Enhance Cargo Services
Swissport International, recognized globally as a premier aviation services provider, has made a significant move in the air cargo sector by signing a binding agreement to acquire Swiftair Maroc, a cargo handling company based in Casablanca. This strategic acquisition at Mohammed V Airport underscores Swissport's commitment to enhancing its service offerings in the rapidly growing Moroccan market.
Swiftair Maroc operates a sizable airside warehouse spanning 3,700 square meters at the airport. This facility is equipped with specialized temperature-controlled infrastructure, including cold storage rooms designed specifically for pharmaceutical products and perishable goods, which are essential for maintaining the integrity of sensitive shipments.
Warwick Brady, President & CEO of Swissport International, highlighted the importance of this acquisition by stating, "Morocco is a dynamic and fast-growing market with increasing importance in global trade flows." He elaborated that the integration of Swiftair Maroc into Swissport's operations aligns perfectly with the company's strategy to accelerate its global cargo business expansion. Morocco serves as a crucial nexus for trade between Europe, Africa, and the Americas, bolstering key export sectors such as automotive, aerospace, agriculture, and textiles while also facilitating vital imports.
Salvador Moreno, Founder and CEO of Swiftair, expressed pride in the successful establishment of their operations in Morocco. He remarked on Swiftair's decision to exit non-core activities to reinforce its leadership within the air cargo market, emphasizing the positive collaboration with their partners at Swiftair Maroc. Moreno noted that Swissport is well-positioned to guide the company through its next stage of growth and development.
The Moroccan air cargo market has demonstrated consistent growth, fueled by the country's expanding export capabilities and its strategic geographical location. Casablanca's Mohammed V International Airport serves as the main air freight hub, handling approximately 95 percent of Morocco's total air cargo volumes. This airport is pivotal in connecting Moroccan industries with global markets while supporting the demands of time-sensitive supply chains.
Moreover, this acquisition enhances Swissport's established footprint in Morocco, where it already operates across various business sectors. Currently, Swissport Maroc provides ground handling services at 16 airports throughout the country, offers executive aviation services in Marrakesh, Casablanca, and Tangier, and manages 10 airport lounges across nine locations under its Aspire brand. The addition of cargo handling capabilities marks a strategic enhancement to Swissport’s integrated service offerings in Morocco.
