Switzerland and Morocco Strengthen Migration Cooperation
The identification process for rejected asylum seekers in Switzerland has historically taken more than five months. However, recent developments indicate that this duration will significantly decrease to approximately 30 days, as confirmed by Daniel Bach, spokesperson for the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM). In addition to expediting the identification process, the issuance of replacement travel documents will also be accelerated, enhancing the efficiency of repatriation efforts.
Although the agreement between Switzerland and Morocco has yet to be officially signed, it is pending approval from the Federal Council. The negotiations were completed by Vincenzo Mascioli, Switzerland's State Secretary for Migration, alongside Khalid Zerouli, Morocco's Director for Migration and Border Control.
The agreement not only addresses the repatriation of asylum seekers but also aims to strengthen economic cooperation between the two nations. In April, discussions were initiated between Bern and Rabat to improve the repatriation procedures. This dialogue was highlighted during a visit to Bern by Moroccan Minister Nasser Bourita, where migration issues were a focal point of their discussions with Swiss Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis.
