Switzerland Supports Morocco's Autonomy Plan
Switzerland has reiterated its endorsement of Morocco's autonomy initiative regarding the ongoing dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, characterizing it as “the most serious, credible, and pragmatic basis” for achieving a resolution on the international stage. This affirmation was made during a joint statement following productive discussions between Ignazio Cassis, Switzerland's Vice President and Foreign Minister, and Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates. This meeting took place during Bourita's working visit to Bern, the Swiss capital.
In the joint statement, Switzerland also expressed its appreciation for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, asserting that the autonomy option, under Moroccan sovereignty, stands out as one of the most realistic and viable solutions amidst the ongoing international endeavors aimed at reaching a political settlement to the dispute. Furthermore, Switzerland underscored its commitment to supporting the pivotal role of the United Nations in this context, including the efforts made by the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, which are integral to the ongoing political process.
This supportive stance from Switzerland emerges at a time when there is a palpable increase in international momentum favoring the autonomy initiative, reflected in the shifting positions of several nations, which further solidify Morocco’s proposal as a practical and sustainable approach to resolving the longstanding dispute.
