For the past two years, Synhelion’s Dawn facility in Jülich has been producing thousands of liters of synthetic fuel, and now the company has made a significant agreement with the Moroccan government to scale up production. A memorandum of understanding has been signed between Synhelion and several key Moroccan ministries, including the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, and the Ministry of Investment, Convergence, and Public Policy Evaluation, along with the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development (AMDIE). This agreement lays the groundwork for the establishment of a facility dedicated to producing renewable synthetic fuels with an ambitious target capacity of 100,000 tons per year.
The selected site for this project is in the Tan-Tan province, located within the Guelmim-Oued Noun region of Morocco, where Synhelion has already reserved land for the new facility. This region is particularly promising due to its abundant renewable energy resources and favorable conditions for building a comprehensive value chain.
Karim Zidane, the Moroccan Minister for Investment, Convergence, and Public Policy Evaluation, highlighted that this memorandum underscores Morocco's commitment to attracting impactful investments that intertwine innovation, sustainability, and industrial development. With the vast potential for renewable energy in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, this project aims to create new value chains, open local economic opportunities, and bolster the country's position as a competitive hub for green industry. He expressed enthusiasm for Synhelion's engagement in Morocco and the government’s eagerness to support the project as it advances through its developmental phases.
Synhelion specializes in the production of renewable synthetic kerosene, diesel, and gasoline for the transportation sector. These synthetic fuels can replace fossil fuels directly without the need for modifications to existing engines or fuel infrastructure. They are produced using renewable energy and biogenic waste, resulting in net CO2 emissions reductions of up to 100% compared to traditional fossil fuels. Additionally, these fuels contribute to a more resilient and diversified energy supply.
Beyond Morocco, Synhelion is exploring suitable locations worldwide for commercial facilities dedicated to producing renewable synthetic fuels. The Moroccan project is a pivotal step towards scaling up the technology and enabling the long-term production of renewable fuels at competitive prices. The newly established branch, Synhelion Morocco, has already achieved Casablanca Finance City status, placing it in a significant international economic and investment center within Morocco.
Gianluca Ambrosetti, Co-CEO and co-founder of Synhelion, emphasized that Morocco's exceptional renewable energy resources and clear industrial strategy make it an ideal location for scaling their synthetic fuel technology. With the signed memorandum, the reserved land, and the local branch established, they are transitioning from the evaluation phase to concrete project development, bringing them closer to their first commercial large-scale facility in the region. Ambrosetti expressed optimism about deepening collaboration with the Moroccan government moving forward.
