Talisman Metals plc, an Irish mining exploration company, is actively exploring three copper-silver project groups located in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. These projects are strategically positioned adjacent to the newly operational Tizert mine owned by Managem Group. Recently, Talisman commenced its inaugural drilling campaign at the Tirzzit project, signaling a significant step forward in their exploration efforts.
While many copper exploration companies focus on established regions in South America or Central Asia, Talisman Metals has set its sights on the less-explored terrain of Morocco. The company holds a 100% stake in three project groups covering over 145 square kilometers, located south of Marrakech and east of Agadir. The primary goal is to uncover sediment-hosted, stratiform deposits, which are recognized as the second most important type of copper deposits globally, following porphyry occurrences. Notably, part of Talisman's projects lies within the same geological basin and formation as Managem's Tizert deposit, which is set to begin production in 2025 with an estimated mine life of 18 years and boasts over 1.1 million tons of measured and indicated copper resources.
In recent years, Morocco has emerged as an increasingly attractive destination for mineral exploration. A new mining code was introduced in 2016, further opening the country to foreign investments. According to the Fraser Institute's current investment attractiveness index, Morocco ranks 15th globally for 2025 and 25th in political perception. The nation benefits from a well-developed infrastructure comprising ports, roads, rail networks, and reliable electricity supply, with ongoing expansions in mining and processing capacities. Currently, mining contributes only about 1% to Morocco's gross domestic product of approximately $400 billion, yet it accounts for around 30% of export revenues.
With free trade agreements with the EU and the USA, along with a growing role in global supply chains—including metal supply contracts with BMW and Renault, as well as lithium refining agreements with LG and Yahua—Morocco is increasingly positioning itself as a key supplier of critical raw materials for Europe’s energy transition. The country's geographical proximity to Europe provides it with a structural competitive advantage over mining regions located further away.
Talisman is navigating a copper market increasingly characterized by supply shortages. While precious metals have seen a slight recovery from their recent peaks, copper remains near its all-time high, having surged approximately 60% over the past three years. This increase is driven by the expansion of power grids, electric mobility, wind and solar installations, and a rising demand for data centers powered by artificial intelligence, all of which require substantial amounts of conductive copper. On the supply side, declining ore grades in existing mines and neglected project developments during weaker price phases hinder growth, while new projects often take many years to reach production. For companies like Talisman Metals, this environment presents an opportunity where any immediate exploration successes could attract heightened investor interest and potentially larger producers.
The Tizert project group, which includes Tizert North, Fougnar, and Tizert South, encompasses 71 square kilometers and serves as the centerpiece of Talisman's portfolio, bordering the Managem Tizert deposit. Tizert North is situated approximately 8 kilometers northeast of the northern deposit boundary and may host downward-dipping extensions of the neighboring deposit at target depths exceeding 300 meters.
The Fougnar area spans about 8 kilometers and features several scattered copper-silver occurrences, with historical trench samples yielding grades between 0.50% and 1.45% copper and up to 70 grams per ton of silver, values comparable to over half of the samples from the Tizert deposit. An exploration program conducted in 2026, which included trenching, ground geophysics, and a smaller exploratory drilling program, confirmed Fougnar as a sediment-hosted copper-silver system and identified eleven high-priority exploration targets for further investigation.
In early September 2026, the relevant authorities in Agadir extended the two Fougnar licenses for an additional four years, until May 2030, and classified them as fundamentally convertible into mining licenses, further underscoring the advanced stage of the project.
The Argana project, covering approximately 58 square kilometers and located about 60 kilometers northeast of Agadir, focuses on copper with minor silver and uranium content in so-called Red-Bed type deposits. In nearby artisanal mining areas outside Talisman’s licenses, a representative trench sample indicated an average grade of 3.32% copper and 50 grams per ton of silver, although no drilling has yet been conducted on Argana itself.
Currently, the Tirzzit project appears to offer the most potential. Talisman acquired this project from Aya Gold & Silver (TSX: AYA) in February 2026. Aya, which holds a 5.7% stake in Talisman, operates the Zgounder silver mine located approximately 25 kilometers to the north. The Tirzzit project is about 225 kilometers east of Agadir and includes two mining licenses covering a total area of 16.5 square kilometers.
Historical exploration work conducted by the Moroccan authority BRPM in the 1970s revealed significant intervals of up to 3.16% copper over 2.5 meters and 0.60% copper over 11.4 meters. More recent work conducted between 2019 and 2025, including remote sensing, airborne geophysics, and soil sampling, confirmed positive copper grades in several outcrop sediment units, while soil samples taken in spring 2026 indicated new copper mineralization east of the historical drill hole TT6 and extended the known mineralization zone by about 2 kilometers to the east.
Following a capital increase of approximately £500,000 completed in August, Talisman initiated a drilling program in early September, totaling approximately 3,000 meters. By September 11, 187 meters had been drilled, and the first RC drill hole was completed, revealing visible copper mineralization in the form of malachite within the drill material. Initial samples were scheduled for laboratory analysis shortly thereafter, while drilling continued along the basal series and in its projected strike direction to investigate the potential lateral extension of the mineralization.
Plans are in place to shift focus to Fougnar next, where several thousand meters of follow-up drilling are anticipated in the fourth quarter. This August round of financing complements a previous financing round completed in January 2026 for £1.1 million, securing the ongoing programs. With an insider ownership of 41% in the company, a close alignment of interests between management and shareholders is ensured.
Talisman Metals thus offers investors early access to a previously underexplored yet geologically promising copper region, whose potential is impressively underscored by its proximity to the successfully operational Tizert mine of Managem. With the ongoing drilling campaign at Tirzzit and the scheduled continuation at Fougnar in the fourth quarter, two potential catalysts for stock price movement are set to unfold in the coming months. Given the current market capitalization of only approximately £4.8 million, robust drilling results can quickly lead to a reassessment of the stock in light of the structural copper shortage.
Talisman Metals is developing a portfolio of promising copper and silver projects in Morocco's Atlas Mountains, focusing on underexplored regions with strong geological potential and growing strategic importance for raw material supply.
