Tanger and Casablanca: Showcasing Morocco's Industrial Potential for Basque Companies

Tanger and Casablanca: A Gateway for Basque Enterprises

Recently, a delegation of approximately twenty companies from the Basque region of Spain, accompanied by their chamber of commerce and provincial authorities, embarked on a mission to Morocco. This initiative involved extensive visits to significant industrial sites, including the Stellantis and Renault factories, as well as discussions with the local General Electric Manufacturing (GEM) to identify concrete opportunities in the automotive, aerospace, and industrial equipment sectors. The visit is part of a broader strategy to explore Morocco's industrial landscape, particularly in cities like Tanger and Casablanca, which are emerging as vital hubs for international business expansion.

Exploring Strategic Opportunities and Building Partnerships

This institutional mission, led by the Chamber of Commerce of Gipuzkoa and the provincial government of this northern Spanish region, confirmed the existence of substantial opportunities for Basque businesses across several strategic sectors. Throughout their tour, the delegation engaged in a series of institutional meetings, business encounters, and visits to industrial sites aimed at evaluating Morocco's potential as a destination for internationalization. In Casablanca, discussions involved key organizations such as the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) and the Moroccan Association for the Automotive Industry and Commerce (AMICA). The presence of local financial and institutional stakeholders further emphasized the collaborative spirit of this initiative.

In Tanger, the delegation explored several major industrial sites, including those operated by Stellantis and Renault, and interacted with representatives from the Regional Investment Center (CRI), highlighting the dynamism of this northern industrial hub. The mission also included visits to the GIMAS aerospace cluster in Casablanca and a manufacturing unit of the Spanish group Irizar, thus reinforcing connections with high-value-added sectors. According to the mission's organizers, Morocco is solidifying its position as an export-oriented industrial platform, particularly in the automotive industry, where the structuring of supply chains and demand for components, automation, and industrial services present promising growth prospects.

Additionally, opportunities have been identified in the aerospace sector, buoyed by the development of specialized clusters and the presence of international groups, as well as in the agri-food sector, supported by rising domestic demand. The textile industry also remains competitive in fast-production segments targeting Europe. The participating businesses have pinpointed three main development axes: integration into automotive value chains, provision of industrial equipment—including machinery, automation, and engineering—and the semi-finished products sector, focusing on metals, plastics, and chemicals.

The mission aims to strengthen ties with the Moroccan economic ecosystem by leveraging institutional partners and sharing experiences from companies already established in the country, thereby refining market access strategies. The program is set to conclude with a final series of meetings in Casablanca with consulting firms and companies specializing in investment facilitation, marking a significant step towards establishing medium-term partnerships.
