Transforming Casablanca: The Vision Behind Avenue Royale

The Reshaping of Casablanca's Landscape

The construction machinery has quieted, giving way to a profound silence that underscores the completion of demolitions in the Mouha Ou Saïd and An-Nazala sectors. This vast emptiness sets the stage for the ambitious Avenue Royale project, which aims to reconcile the memory of the place with the resettlement of residents and the revitalization of Casablanca's heart. The area has undergone a striking transformation; where dense housing and local businesses once stood, an open esplanade now unfolds. In the distance, the absence of former buildings reveals the iconic silhouette of the Hassan II Mosque, serving as a new visual landmark against the urban backdrop.

It is hard to view these scenes without considering the families who called these neighborhoods home for generations. Leaving behind a residence and a street filled with memories and social ties represents a profound uprooting, an emotional experience shared by many in Casablanca. However, for others, this move to new housing in the Nassim district symbolizes hope for a more dignified and secure life, free from unsanitary conditions, even as their hearts remain tethered to the stones of the past. This delicate equilibrium between nostalgia for a collective memory and the promise of a better future is at the core of the urban transition.

A New Urban Vision for Casablanca

The ultimate goal of this initiative is to allow Casablanca to breathe anew. The Avenue Royale project is envisioned as a bridge connecting the historic center to the sea—a space where modernity is built upon the foundations of the old city. Designed around a sprawling urban park of approximately 47 hectares, the future avenue is intended to serve as a green lung in the city's heart. The aim is to enhance the living conditions for residents and boost Casablanca's tourist and economic appeal by creating a structured axis linking the waterfront to the administrative center.

With a projected budget close to 2 billion dirhams, the project involves several public stakeholders, including the municipality, the regional authorities, and development companies. Its completion is expected to extend until around 2029-2030. Ultimately, Avenue Royale is set to feature green spaces, cultural facilities, and commercial and recreational activities, all within a modern architectural framework. While it promises to redefine the city center's appearance, its success will hinge on both the quality of its development and the engagement of the residents affected by this urban transformation.
