Tangier Airport's Ambitious Expansion Plans
The Tangier Airport is on the verge of a significant transformation which aims to dramatically increase its capacity in the upcoming years. This ambitious project is part of a national initiative to enhance airport infrastructure across Morocco, with a substantial funding allocation amounting to 270 million euros provided by the Moroccan government and the African Development Bank. This funding agreement was officially signed on September 29 in Casablanca, paving the way for the execution of expansion and modernization projects at four major airports, including Tangier, Marrakech, Agadir, and Fes.
Enhancing Capacity by 2030
The primary objective for Tangier Airport is to boost its capacity to accommodate approximately 3.6 million passengers annually by the year 2030. This enhancement is designed to keep pace with the anticipated increase in flight frequencies and passenger volumes. The expansion comes at a time when Tangier is experiencing persistent growth across economic, industrial, and tourism sectors, necessitating the upgrade of transportation and connectivity methods, particularly in air travel. Planned improvements at the airport include the expansion and modernization of terminals, renovation of aircraft spaces, and the introduction of state-of-the-art security and safety systems. Moreover, the airport is expected to implement advanced baggage handling systems and digital solutions aimed at streamlining and accelerating various passenger transit stages.
This project aligns seamlessly with the broader transformations taking place in Tangier in recent years, especially with the surge in industrial and logistical activities, alongside a rising appeal for tourism and investment. The airport's development will significantly enhance its ability to manage the influx of tourists, investors, and business travelers, as well as those connected to the Moroccan diaspora abroad. Additionally, a variety of sectors, including tourism, services, commerce, and logistics, stand to benefit from this dynamic, linked to both the implementation of projects and the operation of new facilities.
The strategic plan extends beyond Tangier, targeting an overall increase in capacity at the four airports to new levels by 2030. The specific goals set for Marrakech Airport aim for a capacity of 14 million passengers annually, while Agadir will reach 5 million, and Fes is projected to accommodate 3 million, alongside Tangier's targeted 3.6 million.
In December 2025, the Board of Directors of the African Development Bank approved the funding for this program, which has now progressed to the official signing phase of the loan agreement, propelling the project further along its execution path. For Tangier, this initiative serves to strengthen its infrastructure and enhance its rising status as an economic, industrial, and logistical hub, taking advantage of its strategic location near Europe and its increasing openness to international markets.
