Exploring Deep-Rooted Connections
The historical connections between Catalonia and Morocco took center stage during a recent conference held at the University of Tarragona, organized by the Consulate of the Kingdom of Morocco. This multidisciplinary forum, themed "Tarragona and Morocco from the 19th to the 21st Century: Historical Genealogy and Contemporary Challenges of a Shared Mediterranean Space," provided a platform for examining the cultural, social, and economic interactions between Tarragona and Morocco dating back to the 19th century.
Marking the official launch of the Chair of Moroccan Studies initiated by the Moroccan General Consulate in Tarragona, the event aims to solidify an academic hub dedicated to fostering a long-standing bilateral relationship that is poised for the future. During the opening session, speakers emphasized the symbolic significance of this Chair, designed as a space for dialogue and reflection rooted in a shared history shaped by ancient Mediterranean trade routes.
Strategic Relations and Cultural Contributions
Participants also highlighted the strategic importance of the current relations between the two regions, bolstered by enhanced institutional cooperation and steadily growing economic exchanges. The role of the Tarragona port as a major logistical platform connecting the two shores of the Mediterranean was particularly emphasized, reinforcing Morocco's position as a key trading partner for Catalonia outside the European Union.
The conference further showcased the significant contributions of civil society and the Moroccan community within the province, one of the most dynamic in Catalonia. The successful integration of Moroccans in Tarragona and their notable contributions to vital sectors such as agriculture, industry, logistics, and professional services were recognized as essential factors in promoting social cohesion and local development.
The program also featured a cultural segment, with musical performances by Adil El Amrani and traditional dances presented by the Nostalgia association from Lleida, along with educational activities aimed at young audiences organized by the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution (IPHES). This conference has thus illuminated the strength and depth of the relationships between Tarragona and Morocco, which are embedded in a dynamic of reinforced cooperation contributing to the establishment of a shared Mediterranean space based on mutual understanding and proximity between the two societies.
