Protest by Taxi Drivers in Meknes Against Rising Fuel Costs

On Thursday, taxi drivers in Meknes organized a significant protest march towards the local government office in Akdal, located on Abd Al-Rahman Ben Zidane Street. This demonstration aimed to express their frustration regarding the escalating fuel prices and the mounting financial burdens that professional drivers are facing. The protest coincided with the implementation of new fuel price hikes, with diesel prices nearing 16.40 dirhams per liter at various stations, marking an increase of approximately 80 cents per liter. Gasoline prices have also seen a corresponding rise, further straining the financial viability of taxi operators.

The demonstrators called for immediate intervention from relevant authorities to address the urgent issues arising from the soaring fuel prices. They expressed concerns that without prompt action, taxi drivers would likely be compelled to increase transportation fares, which would adversely affect the purchasing power of citizens and could lead to additional social unrest due to any subsequent fare hikes.

This protest is part of a larger national trend, as taxi drivers across Morocco, particularly in cities such as Fes and Casablanca, have also held similar demonstrations. The common theme is the urgent need for solutions to alleviate the pressures caused by rising fuel costs and to address a series of longstanding professional and social demands. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how authorities will respond to these pressing concerns raised by the taxi drivers in Meknes and beyond.
