EU's Response to Recent Border Changes
In a recent statement from Brussels, it has been confirmed by EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Brunner, that Spain and Italy have committed to implementing temporary border controls. Brunner highlighted that he had been in communication with the interior ministers of both nations regarding this matter. The decision to enforce border checks comes in the wake of a crisis in the Spanish North African exclave of Ceuta, where approximately 70,000 individuals arrived by swimming across the sea at the end of July. Most of these migrants have since returned to Morocco. In a reciprocal measure, Spain has also instituted border controls for those entering from Italy as a precautionary step to manage the influx of people.
