Major Development in Moroccan Rail Infrastructure
The Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF) has awarded a significant contract worth 562.7 million dirhams to the construction company TGCC. This contract involves the construction of the Marrakech-Guéliz station and the technicentre, both integral components of the high-speed rail project connecting Kénitra to the vibrant city of Marrakech. This strategic development marks a crucial advancement in Morocco's efforts to enhance its rail infrastructure.
According to the final results of the tender published by ONCF, TGCC emerged victorious over another Moroccan construction group, SGTM, whose bid was slightly higher at 572.8 million dirhams. The selection committee justified its decision based on TGCC's compliant and cost-effective proposal, which was notably above the initial estimate of 490 million dirhams set by the project owner. This award signifies not only a financial commitment but also a vote of confidence in TGCC's capabilities to deliver essential infrastructure projects.
Importance of the Marrakech-Guéliz Station and Technicentre
The Marrakech-Guéliz station is set to become one of the main entry points for the upcoming high-speed rail line, designed to accommodate the anticipated increase in rail traffic towards Marrakech. It will facilitate connections between high-speed services, conventional trains, and various urban transportation modes, thereby enhancing the overall travel experience for commuters and tourists alike. On the other hand, the technicentre will serve an operational purpose, housing maintenance, inspection, and servicing operations for the rolling stock. This installation at the southern end of the future line ensures that the high-speed trains will be supported by a well-equipped technical infrastructure.
Both structures complement the broader railway works initiated as part of the LGV extension project. The Kénitra-Marrakech initiative includes the establishment of new infrastructures, the upgrading of stations, and the implementation of maintenance and operational facilities. This project aims to extend the currently operational high-speed axis between Tangier and Casablanca further south, demonstrating Morocco's commitment to modernizing its transportation network and improving connectivity across the country.
