The 9th Edition of Atlas Workshops at the Marrakech Film Festival: 30 Projects Selected

The Exciting Lineup for the Marrakech Film Festival

The prestigious Atlas Workshops, part of the renowned Marrakech International Film Festival, are set to take place from November 22 to 26, 2023. This year's event coincides with the 23rd edition of the festival, scheduled from November 20 to 28. Announced on October 19, the workshops will highlight the burgeoning talent within Moroccan, Arab, and African cinema by showcasing a selection of 30 remarkable projects sourced from 14 different countries. Out of a staggering 410 submissions, which included 320 projects in development and 90 films in various stages of production or post-production, these projects have been meticulously chosen to represent the next wave of cinematic creativity.

Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho has been appointed as the honorary patron of the event. He expressed his enthusiasm by stating, "Listening to new ideas and understanding the aspirations of the new generations of filmmakers is a source of inspiration for my own work." This sentiment highlights the collaborative spirit that the Atlas Workshops aim to foster among emerging filmmakers.

Highlights of the Selected Projects

This year's selection features a diverse array of 14 development projects, comprising 12 fiction films and two documentaries, including six first feature films. Additionally, 11 films in production or post-production, five of which are also first feature films, will be presented, along with five Moroccan projects categorized under Atlas Close-Ups, which include four fiction works and one documentary.

Among the standout Moroccan projects are "Ashes" by Meryem Benm’Barek, "The Sleepers" by Sofia Alaoui, "Waltz of the Savages" by Yasmine Benkiran, "Eldorado" by Alaa Eddine Aljem, and "Wolfmother" by Ismaël El Iraki. Notably, four films previously supported by the workshops are making a return after receiving development assistance: "Seasons of the Weary Kind" (2019), "Eldorado" (2020), "Fagadaga" (2022), and "Wolfmother" (2023).

Furthermore, Atlas Station will feature eight Moroccan professionals—four men and four women—who have been selected from a pool of 30 candidates. This initiative aims to provide them with training and networking opportunities with international experts. Additionally, five Moroccan short films, chosen from 24 submissions, will receive support for editing and distribution.

Since their inception in 2018, the Atlas Workshops have evolved into a crucial component of the festival's Atlas Programs. Other initiatives include Atlas Press, which supports film criticism, and the Atlas Distribution Meetings, which gather around sixty professionals from Africa, the Arab world, and Europe. Atlas Press is scheduled for November 23 to 27, while Atlas Station and the Distribution Meetings will occur from November 22 to 26.
