The Socialist Party's Disheartening Performance in the 2026 Elections
In the recent 2026 elections for the House of Representatives, the Socialist Party, known locally as "Hizb al-Taqaddum wal-Ichtirak", managed to secure only 19 seats. This result is significantly lower than their expectations, as the party had set a goal of obtaining at least 50 seats. The breakdown of their 19 seats includes 10 from local constituencies and 9 reserved for women in regional constituencies.
Among the notable winners from the local constituencies were Rashid Hamouni in the Boulemane district, Mariam Wahsasa in the Béni Mellal district, Ahmad Al-Abadi in Taza, and Abdelilah Idrissi Bouzaidi in Taounate-Tissa. Additionally, Osman Al-Mursi won in the Essaouira district, while Abdelkhaleq Bysnati claimed victory in Larache, Hassan Al-Darham in Laayoune, and Mohamed Qasha in Tinghir.
In terms of regional constituencies, key victories included Mariam Al-Kanouni in the Marrakech-Safi region, Dalila Al-Oudidi in Casablanca-Settat, Soumia Munsef Haji in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, alongside Hanan Al-Sufi in the Eastern region, and Fatima Aswaidi in Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra. The list of successful female candidates from the "Hizb al-Kitab" also featured Khadija Al-Baz in the Souss-Massa region, Ahlam Jeld in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, Fatima Zahra Barhiyoui in the Fez-Meknes region, and Hafida Imami in the Béni Mellal-Khenifra region.
Despite these wins, the results fell far short of the party's ambitions and expectations. The Socialist Party had previously enjoyed a better standing, securing 22 seats in the elections held on September 8, 2021. This decline in their electoral performance raises concerns about their future viability as a political entity in Morocco's evolving political landscape.
