Election Results Reveal Disappointment for the Party of Progress and Socialism
The 2026 parliamentary elections have concluded with the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) securing only 19 seats in the Moroccan House of Representatives. This outcome is a stark contrast to the party's initial aspirations, which included a target of obtaining at least 50 seats. The distribution of the 19 seats includes 10 from local constituencies and 9 reserved for women in regional lists.
Among the successful candidates in local constituencies are Rachid Hamoni in the Boulemane district, Mariem Wahsa in Beni Mellal, Ahmed Al-Abadi in Taza, Abdelilah Idrissi Bouzaidi in Taounate-Tissa, Amine Byezid in El Jadida, and Fouad Karim in Khémisset. Other local winners include Othman Al-Marsi in Essaouira, Abdelkhaleq Bissinti in Larache, Hassan Al-Darham in Laayoune, and Mohamed Qasha in Tinghir.
In terms of regional lists for women, the party celebrated victories with candidates such as Mariem Al-Kanouni in the Marrakech-Safi region, Dalila Al-Oudiyi in Casablanca-Settat, Soumia Al-Mansaf Haji in Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, Hana Soufi in the Eastern region, and Fatima Asuidi in Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra. The list of successful female candidates further includes Khadija Al-Baz in Souss-Massa, Ahlam Jeld in Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, Fatima Zahra Barhiyoui in Fez-Meknes, and Hafida Imami in Beni Mellal-Khenifra.
Despite their efforts, the election results fell short of expectations, especially considering that the party had previously achieved 22 seats in the 2021 elections held on September 8. This decline in electoral performance raises questions about the party's future strategies and its ability to connect with voters effectively.
