The Future of Spanish Language Education in Morocco: A Critical Analysis

The Spanish language is currently experiencing a moment of expansion in Morocco, a notion that has become a common refrain in educational and cultural discussions. It is often asserted that the ties between Spain and Morocco are growing ever closer, that the interest in the Spanish language is on the rise, and that the professional opportunities linked to Spanish studies are multiplying. However, a closer examination of the educational reality invites a serious reconsideration of this optimistic assessment.

The status of the Spanish language within the Moroccan educational system is facing an especially precarious moment. In numerous secondary schools and high schools, there has been a progressive decline in the presence of Spanish since 2010. This deterioration is evidenced by the reduction of student groups, the decrease in instructional hours, and the loss of educational space to other foreign languages, a reality acknowledged by many educators and specialists in the field.

This concern has even reached the parliamentary level. Recently, a question was posed to the Minister of Education regarding the critical state of Spanish language teaching in Moroccan institutes, reflecting a worry that extends beyond the academic realm and is beginning to gain public and institutional attention.

Moreover, there is another particularly significant issue at play: the advocacy for Spanish teachers' rights to sufficient class groups and teaching loads to carry out their work under normal conditions. While the needs of other linguistic specialties continue to be addressed, many Spanish teachers are watching with apprehension as their discipline increasingly loses ground in educational planning.

The situation becomes even more alarming when examining the university sphere. For the academic year 2026-2027, no positions for Assistant Professors in Hispanic Studies have been announced at Moroccan universities. This statistic is difficult to reconcile with the image of growth and strengthening that often accompanies institutional discourses about the Spanish language.

Languages do not become entrenched solely through declarations of support or symbolic recognition of their cultural importance. Their vitality fundamentally depends on concrete educational policies, sustained investments, training opportunities, and professional prospects for new generations of students and educators.

Spanish remains a language of undeniable historical, cultural, and strategic importance for Morocco. Precisely for this reason, the current situation demands serious reflection and open debate about its future. Ignoring warning signs or substituting analysis with rhetorical optimism will only exacerbate a problem that is already becoming evident in classrooms and academic institutions across the country.
