Honoring the Memory of a Great Scholar
As the clamor of daily life subsides, the local memory of Zaiou seeks to remember the faces that brought tranquility during turbulent times, emphasizing a love for goodness above all else. Among these cherished figures is the late esteemed scholar, Professor Mohamed Khadraoui, affectionately known in the community as 'Sitou'. His profound impact has left indelible marks on the hearts of generations who witnessed his remarkable journey.
Professor Khadraoui was not merely a transient figure on the stage of preaching and education; he was an entire educational institution in his own right. Born into the esteemed Oulad Sitout tribe, he grew up in a conservative environment grounded in authentic values. His academic journey commenced with memorizing the Holy Quran in traditional schools, particularly at the 'Tine Mallal' school located on the outskirts of Zaiou. Here, he absorbed the principles of Islamic jurisprudence and the Arabic language under the guidance of his revered teacher, Sidi Mohamed Ben Amr Bressoul, mastering important texts such as Al-Ajrumiyyah, Ibn Ashir, and Alfiyeh Ibn Malik.
A Lifelong Commitment to Education
His quest for knowledge extended beyond local confines, reaching the scholarly hubs of the old world. He transitioned to institutions such as Dar Al-Makhzen in Farakhana, eventually arriving at the illustrious Al-Qarawiyyin University in Fez, where he learned from its distinguished scholars. This academic path culminated at the Faculty of Islamic Studies in Tetouan, part of Al-Qarawiyyin University, where he obtained his formal university credentials and earned a degree that paved the way for his entry into traditional teaching. He served as a teacher at Mohammed V High School in Nador until his retirement.
Beyond his role in the classroom, Professor Khadraoui etched his name into the religious memory of the Nador region through his long-standing service at the ancient mosque of Zaiou, where he spent over forty years on the pulpit under the auspices of the local scientific council. Throughout these decades, his calm voice, grounded in moderation, brought peace and solace to the hearts of worshippers, blending gentle admonition with wise guidance.
When he passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2013, at the age of 86, the city of Zaiou bid farewell to him with a grand procession led by scholars from the local council and representatives from the regional Islamic affairs delegation. His pure body was laid to rest in the Oulad Bourimi cemetery after prayers at the Al-Fawaris Mosque. Although 'Sidi Mohand' has departed, his aromatic legacy remains firmly rooted in the hearts of his students and all who appreciated his dedication and loyalty, ensuring that his story continues to illuminate the rich scientific and religious history of the region.
