The Netherlands Advocates for Autonomy Under Moroccan Sovereignty in Sahara Dispute

The Netherlands’ Position on Sahara Dispute

In a recent statement, Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen emphasized that the Netherlands views genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the most viable solution to the ongoing dispute over the Sahara region. This declaration was made during a press briefing after a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in Rabat, marking Berendsen's inaugural visit outside the European Union since joining the Dutch cabinet. The officials issued a Joint Communiqué underscoring their discussions, which took place on April 7-8, and reaffirmed their positions regarding the Sahara issue.

Berendsen reiterated the Netherlands' endorsement of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 and expressed support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura. The objective is to facilitate negotiations grounded in Morocco's proposed autonomy plan, aiming for a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political resolution. The Dutch Foreign Minister further committed to aligning his country’s actions with this stance at diplomatic and economic levels, emphasizing adherence to international law.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

During the press conference, Berendsen recognized Morocco, under King Mohammed VI’s leadership, as a reliable partner committed to fostering global peace and stability. He praised the King’s personal involvement in advocating for the Palestinian cause and highlighted the successful collaboration between Morocco and the Netherlands during the recent Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution. Berendsen also commended Morocco's notable advancements, including its modern infrastructure and extensive economic opportunities.

In light of the current geopolitical landscape, Berendsen described Morocco as a strategic ally for the Netherlands, particularly due to its strong connections with West Africa, the Sahel, and Gulf nations. He acknowledged Morocco’s proactive role in promoting development and stability in the Sahel region. Bourita, in his remarks, celebrated the recent positive momentum in relations between the Netherlands and Morocco, attributing this progress to the clear and ambitious foreign policy initiated by King Mohammed VI. This policy has fostered robust bilateral ties founded on mutual respect, transparency, and a genuine partnership that addresses the priorities of both nations.

Additionally, Bourita noted that the Netherlands' recent stance on the Moroccan Sahara has been pivotal in enhancing bilateral relations, as it aligns with international law and UN resolutions. He emphasized that this constructive approach has strengthened the partnership between two influential regional players on the international stage. The Dutch kingdom, as a significant European actor and a strong proponent of a solid Euro-Moroccan partnership, has emerged as a key partner for Morocco in political dialogue. Both nations are also committed to encouraging private sector investments and seizing business opportunities across Africa.
