The Vital Role of Family-Owned Businesses in Morocco's Economy

Family-owned enterprises play an indispensable role in Morocco's economic landscape, comprising an astonishing 93% of the nation's businesses and providing employment to approximately 6.3 million individuals, which represents around 65% of the overall workforce. This crucial information stems from the inaugural comprehensive study conducted by the Moroccan Family Business Institute (IEF-Maroc) in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), highlighting the significant contributions of these businesses to the Moroccan economy, as reported by Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP).

The findings of this study underscore the prominence of family businesses, which are responsible for generating 60% of the economic value added in Morocco. Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour emphasized the essential role these enterprises play, referring to them as “the backbone of Moroccan trade and the economy.” His remarks reflect the critical importance of family businesses not only for job creation but also for attracting investments and fostering long-term economic growth.

Interestingly, the report reveals that a substantial majority, nearly three-quarters, of family-owned businesses fall into the category of very small, small, or medium-sized enterprises. Despite their substantial economic influence, these businesses face significant hurdles, particularly in terms of succession planning. The average lifespan of a Moroccan family business is noted to be 24.2 years, yet only 31% are led by second-generation family members. Moreover, a mere 5% have managed to thrive beyond the 50-year mark, successfully reaching the third generation or later.

Notably, the study also indicates that family firms that effectively manage the transition of leadership tend to outperform their non-family counterparts. This success can be attributed to the adoption of more robust governance structures and the implementation of formalized management practices, enabling them to maintain their competitive edge in the market.
