Despite the current semblance of normalcy, the situation remains precarious as some immigrants linger, hoping for assistance. Experts, including Carlos Echeverría Jesús, a professor of international relations, have labeled the El Tarajal border as a “joke,” criticizing the government's failure to address its vulnerabilities even after a notable influx of migrants in May 2021. The lack of proactive measures to enhance physical barriers and the presence of security forces has left the border susceptible to irregular entries, which, according to Echeverría, should have prompted immediate action from authorities.
