Tomato Prices Soar in Morocco's Markets Amid Calls for Export Regulation

Unprecedented Surge in Tomato Prices

The tomato market in Morocco is currently experiencing an alarming spike in prices, with costs per kilogram reaching up to 14 dirhams in various marketplaces. This surge has sparked significant discontent among consumers, leading to urgent calls from industry professionals for immediate intervention to regulate exports and restore balance to the domestic market. The rising prices are attributed primarily to the intense exportation of this essential consumer good, prompting demands for a cap on such activities.

Industry Perspectives on the Crisis

According to Abdelrazak Chabi, the president of the wholesale fruit and vegetable traders' association in Casablanca, the rampant exportation is straining the local market. Despite an improvement in water resources this year, the situation is exacerbated by what he describes as a "wild" export strategy that has depleted local supplies. He elaborated that the situation is further complicated by the recent opening of African markets to Moroccan tomatoes, which has allowed produce rejected by European markets due to quality standards to be redirected to Africa, leaving the national market to suffer from shortages.

Chabi emphasized that if exports are not curtailed, prices will remain elevated. He asserted that halting exports would likely lead to a rapid decrease in market prices, significantly enhancing the purchasing power of consumers who are currently unable to cope with the ongoing price hikes. Furthermore, he criticized the regulatory bodies for their failure to manage the situation effectively, urging them to take decisive action to impose export limits to alleviate the financial burden on citizens facing these inflated prices.
