In a troubling report, 28 individuals lost their lives, and 2,806 others sustained injuries, with 121 classified as serious, due to 2,066 traffic accidents recorded in urban areas during the week from August 17 to 23. This alarming statistic highlights the critical state of road safety in these regions.
The General Directorate of National Security attributed the primary causes of these accidents to several factors, ranked in order of prevalence. Key reasons included driver inattention, failure to yield right of way, pedestrian inattention, lack of vehicle control, excessive speed, illegal lane changes, insufficient safe distance between vehicles, driving on the left side of the road, changing lanes without signaling, disregarding stop signs, ignoring red traffic lights, improper overtaking, driving under the influence, and operating vehicles in prohibited directions.
Regarding enforcement and penalties in the realm of road traffic, the source indicated that security services recorded a staggering 53,295 traffic violations. Out of these, 8,398 reports were forwarded to the public prosecutor's office, and a total of 44,897 fines were collected. The financial yield from these penalties amounted to 9,744,575 dirhams. Furthermore, authorities impounded 5,531 vehicles, confiscated 8,398 documents, and suspended 636 vehicles during this enforcement period.
