Rising Concerns for Missing Young Moroccan Migrants
At least ten young Moroccan migrants, including two minors, have been reported missing following a perilous attempt to swim to the occupied city of Ceuta. Families from various Moroccan cities, including El Jadida, Agadir, Chefchaouen, and Fnideq, are desperately searching for their loved ones who have lost contact during this treacherous journey. This alarming situation was highlighted by the Spanish news outlet El Faro de Ceuta, which reported that these missing individuals were part of a larger group of approximately 200 migrants who endeavored to reach the Spanish enclave amidst the festive atmosphere following Spain's World Cup victory.
The majority of these attempts occurred near the Tarajal border area, while around thirty individuals made their way towards Ceuta from the Benzú coastline, originating from the Moroccan locality of Beliones. Among the missing is a 17-year-old named W.B., who reportedly entered the sea on a Sunday night with another young man, Youssef. Another missing teenager, A.M., also 17, has not been heard from since he informed his parents that he was traveling to Fnideq with friends.
The situation is further compounded by the stories of other missing individuals, including 18-year-old A. Al J. from El Jadida, who vanished during the World Cup celebrations, and another 18-year-old, Saad, from Chefchaouen. Saad had departed from Fnideq with a friend, who later returned home, but there has been no news of Saad since their attempted crossing. Additionally, 19-year-old E.A. has been missing for about a week following his own attempt to reach Ceuta by sea, while 20-year-old H.A. disappeared last Friday after notifying his family of his plans to make the crossing.
Two cousins, S.A. and A.A., have also been unaccounted for since July 17, having left during the World Cup celebrations, and 22-year-old H.M. from Agadir has been missing for nearly a week after attempting to swim to Ceuta. As of now, Spanish authorities have not publicly confirmed the status of those reported missing, leaving families in anguish as they continue to seek information regarding their loved ones' fates. The search efforts are ongoing, with families appealing for any information that could provide clarity in this heartbreaking situation.
