Legal Consequences Following a Fatal Accident

A 45-year-old man has been formally charged with involuntary manslaughter after a tragic event occurred during the celebrations following France's victory over Morocco in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup. This unfortunate incident resulted in the death of a 17-year-old girl who was crushed by a truck during the festivities on Thursday night. Witnesses reported that the young girl had climbed onto the back of the stationary vehicle and fell off when it started moving. Jean Durieux, the deputy mayor in charge of culture, emphasized the situation, stating that the truck had begun to move "slowly according to witnesses," as reported by various news sources including RMC Sport.

The ongoing investigation, conducted by the Maubeuge Agglomeration Police Department, led to the truck driver being presented to an investigating judge on Saturday. According to information from the Avesnes-sur-Helpe prosecutor's office, the driver faces aggravated involuntary manslaughter charges under two critical circumstances: operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, registering a breath alcohol level between 0.25 to 0.40 milligrams per liter, and failing to assist the victim after the incident.
