Urgent Calls for Action After Tragic Accident
In the wake of a devastating accident involving unregulated transportation in the remote areas of Morocco, there have been renewed calls for thorough administrative and judicial investigations into the rampant issue of unsafe transport. This situation has tragically claimed the lives of several individuals, including a ten-year-old student who lost his life in a recent incident in the Walmas region of the Atlas Mountains. The accident, which resulted in three fatalities and numerous injuries, was caused by the vehicle's loss of control due to excessive speed and rough terrain.
The chaos surrounding informal transportation has prompted the School Youth Association to take a stand, expressing their outrage and sorrow over the incident. They have called for a comprehensive investigation to unveil the circumstances surrounding the accident, hold accountable those responsible, and impose legal consequences on those who engage in the reckless operation of unregulated public transport, particularly in marginalized mountainous and rural areas.
Demand for Safe School Transportation
Furthermore, the same association has urged authorities to implement safe school transportation measures to protect students from the dangers associated with using informal public transport, which blatantly violates their right to safe education and human dignity. In a solidarity statement, the association highlighted what they termed the “deep marginalization” experienced by the Walmas region in terms of infrastructure and public transport resources, particularly school transportation. They also condemned the deteriorating healthcare situation, pointing to a significant deficit in medical personnel and equipment, a reality that becomes starkly visible when tragedies and traffic accidents occur.
