In the arid mountains of Aït Baâmrane in southern Morocco, an innovative technology is significantly improving the lives of hundreds of rural families. Large nets have been installed along the mountain slopes to capture moisture from the fog that drifts in from the Atlantic Ocean and convert it into drinkable water. This initiative, recognized as one of the largest fog harvesting projects globally, enables the collection of thousands of liters of water daily in a region plagued by drought and advancing desertification.
The system operates through specially designed nets that condense the tiny water droplets suspended in the fog. The collected water is directed to storage tanks and distributed to nearby households using solar-powered pumps. This model has relieved many women and girls from the burden of traveling long distances each day to fetch water—a task that has historically limited their access to education and placed a strain on family economies.
International organizations, including the United Nations, have highlighted this project as a prime example of sustainable climate adaptation in water-scarce regions. Experts believe that this experience can be replicated in other arid areas of Africa and Latin America, particularly in communities where fog is prevalent yet access to water remains limited.
