In Memoriam: Aziz Mekouar, Former Ambassador to the U.S. and China
The Moroccan diplomatic community is mourning the loss of Aziz Mekouar, who passed away on April 4, 2026, at the age of 75. The news of his death was shared by the current Moroccan Ambassador to Washington, Youssef Amrani, via social media platform X. In his tribute, Amrani celebrated Mekouar’s illustrious diplomatic career and his unwavering commitment to serving Morocco.
Mekouar was born on November 13, 1959, in Fes, Morocco. He began his education at the French high school Charles Lepierre in Lisbon and graduated from HEC Paris in 1974. His remarkable journey in diplomacy began shortly thereafter, leading him to serve in several countries, including Portugal, Angola, Italy, Malta, and Albania, as well as representing Morocco at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). From November 2001 to November 2005, he held the prestigious position of President of the FAO Council.
In 2002, Mekouar was appointed as Morocco's Ambassador to the United States, a role he held until September 2011. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in negotiating and signing the free trade agreement between Morocco and the U.S. His diplomatic career continued as he represented Morocco in the People's Republic of China from 2018 to 2023. Following this, he transitioned into advisory roles for major Moroccan corporations and multinational companies.
He leaves behind a grieving family, including his wife and son, Kamil, who will remember him not only as a dedicated diplomat but as a cherished family member.
