The esteemed historian and academic, José Miguel de Toro, passed away at the age of 49 while conducting research in France and Morocco as part of a Fondecyt project. According to the University of the Andes, the professor succumbed to a pulmonary thrombosis during his academic journey outside of Chile.
José Miguel de Toro, who earned his PhD in History from the University of Poitiers, had been a dedicated faculty member in the School of Philosophy and Humanities at the University of the Andes for the past two years. In an official statement, the dean of the faculty, José Luis Widow, expressed profound sorrow at the unexpected loss and highlighted De Toro's exceptional human qualities.
“He was a person who stood out for his spirit of service and warmth. Having obtained his doctorate in History from the University of Poitiers, he had been contributing to the University of the Andes for two years,” he remarked. He further added, “We feel the abruptness of his passing, compounded by the fact that it occurred far from Chile. We pray for him, for his family, and for ourselves, as undoubtedly our community feels deeply affected by his absence.”
Prior to his tenure at the University of the Andes, José Miguel de Toro served as a faculty member at the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción (UCSC), where he engaged in teaching and research, leaving a significant impact on students and colleagues alike.
His untimely death has evoked deep sorrow within the academic communities that were fortunate enough to witness his professional journey.
