Tunis: The New Sunshine Destination Surpassing Marrakech by 2026

Discover Tunis: The Affordable Sunshine Destination

As we approach the year 2026, the sunny allure of Marrakech, long favored by French travelers, is being challenged by the vibrant capital of Tunisia, Tunis. This shift towards Tunis is largely attributed to its affordability, shorter flight times, and proximity to stunning beaches, making it an appealing alternative for budget-conscious vacationers. For years, Marrakech has been synonymous with holidays in the sun for many, offering a mix of exotic appeal, direct flights, and a range of accommodation options. However, the landscape of travel is changing, and Tunis is emerging as a top contender for those seeking a sunny getaway.

According to booking data from Liligo.com, Tunis has already outpaced Marrakech for summer 2025 bookings among French travelers. This trend highlights a significant pivot in vacation choices, as many are now looking for destinations that offer not only sunshine but also better value for money. Guillaume Rostand, a spokesperson for Liligo, pointed out that while more French travelers ventured abroad this past summer, their budgets have shrunk by an average of €74 per person. This has led to a preference for easily accessible and often more affordable holiday spots, a category where Tunis excels.

Why Tunis is Captivating Travelers

The rising popularity of Tunis can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, it has become the leading international destination for clients of Voyages E.Leclerc, again primarily due to pricing. The Tunisian National Tourism Office reported over 5.3 million foreign visitors by July 20, 2025, reflecting a 10% increase from the previous year. The cost of living in Tunisia is also notably lower, with an index of 28.7 compared to Morocco's 29.9, making it approximately 4.9% cheaper to live in Tunis than in Marrakech. For instance, Alison Hammond, a well-known presenter, recently chose Hammamet for a relaxing getaway, enjoying a four-star beachfront hotel for less than €550 per person, including flights.

The climate in Tunis further enhances its appeal. While Marrakech can experience sweltering summer temperatures exceeding 38°C, Tunis offers a more temperate range of 25 to 32°C, thanks to its Mediterranean backdrop. Even in winter, the coastal areas can reach up to 18°C in December, making it a viable winter sun destination just 2.5 hours away by flight. Moreover, the beautiful beaches of La Marsa and Gammarth are only a short drive away, and the renowned resort area of Hammamet is accessible in about an hour. In contrast, reaching Essaouira or Agadir from Marrakech requires a three-hour trip.

Beyond its affordability and climate, Tunis is rich in cultural and historical treasures. The city boasts a UNESCO-listed medina, the Bardo Museum, the ancient ruins of Carthage, and picturesque neighborhoods like Sidi Bou Saïd. The rise of social media platforms, particularly TikTok, has further popularized these attractions, showcasing the charming streets, delicious local cuisine, and pristine beaches, which have sparked a corresponding promotional campaign by the Tunisian tourism sector.
