Two Friends from Valladolid Gear Up for the 2026 Panda Raid Adventure

Embarking on a Desert Adventure

Miguel Machón and Santiago Gutiérrez, two enthusiastic residents of Valladolid, are set to embark on an exhilarating journey as they prepare to participate in the Panda Raid 2026, a thrilling rally that takes place in the deserts of Morocco. In anticipation of their adventure, the duo hosted a vibrant celebration at Salón La Tigre, where they gathered friends, family, sponsors, and curious onlookers to share their project, aptly named 'Apandadores.' This gathering not only marked the countdown to their journey but also allowed those who won't physically venture into the desert to be part of the experience.

Their story is one of long-held dreams and serendipitous partnerships. Miguel, who runs an art shop in Pasaje Gutiérrez, had been contemplating the idea of participating in a rally for a decade. Inspired by the legendary Paris-Dakar rally, he envisioned himself navigating the dunes and living an adventure filled with endurance and motorsport excitement. However, the prospect seemed daunting due to financial constraints and a lack of experience. "The Dakar was always out of reach for me, but I never abandoned the spirit that it embodies," he admits. The emergence of the Panda Raid, a more accessible yet challenging rally, offered him a glimmer of hope. "It's like a mini Paris-Dakar, but real enough to present a genuine challenge," he explains.

The Challenge Ahead

Over the years, their main obstacle was not financial or mechanical; it was finding the right partner to share this extraordinary journey. Everything fell into place when Santiago Gutiérrez, a retired commercial from an agricultural machinery factory, entered the picture. Sharing a mutual passion for adventure, Santiago quickly jumped at the opportunity when Miguel proposed the rally. "I didn’t hesitate. Watching the Dakar always ignited a fire in me. This is the closest we can get to that experience, relying on our own efforts," he shares. Unlike other high-tech competitions, the Panda Raid emphasizes basic mechanics, navigation using a roadbook, and the teams' ability to tackle problems as they arise.

The rally begins on April 11, 2026, in Almería, Spain, followed by a boat crossing to northern Morocco. Participants will face six stages, each ranging from 200 to 250 kilometers, leading them to their final destination in Mehdia. The route varies each year, with 65% of the tracks being new in 2026, featuring a mix of mountainous terrains, rocky paths, and open plains that progressively lead into sandy stretches as they journey south. Miguel and Santiago emphasize that in this competition, victory is not solely about speed; it’s about successfully completing each stage without getting lost, damaging the vehicle, or effectively managing challenges that arise.

Although the rally is indeed a competitive event, camaraderie is at the heart of the experience. "When someone breaks down, others stop to help," Machón summarizes. The shared experience of driving Pandas or Marbellas fosters a supportive atmosphere. "The knowledge applicable to one vehicle is relevant to all. We're not mechanics, but the mechanics of the Pandas are straightforward. If something breaks, we attempt to fix it, and if not, someone is always willing to lend a hand," Gutiérrez adds.

The duo decided to purchase a Seat Marbella that had previously participated in earlier editions of the rally, ensuring it was adequately prepared for the challenge. They bought the vehicle in Asturias and have only needed to make minor adjustments with the help of their sponsors. "We need to carry some spare parts, but we intend to travel light, as it's not wise to be overloaded. We must trust that nothing will break down along the way," Santiago notes.

With only days left until their adventure begins, both Miguel and Santiago are focused on one primary goal: to have fun. "We want to enjoy every stage, avoid getting lost, and keep the car running. Our aim is to immerse ourselves in the experience," they express, surrounded by their supportive family, friends, and sponsors. They plan to share their journey through social media, keeping everyone updated on their progress and experiences along the way.
