UD Las Palmas Sets a Patriotic Tone Following Successful Return from Ceuta
The newly formed 'UD Las Palmas Patriotic' has emerged as a significant entity in the world of Spanish football, especially following the team's recent return from a charter flight to the Moroccan airport of Tangier. The journey was marked by minor delays at the border but concluded successfully. With a remarkable start to the season, highlighted by a decisive victory over Romero's team, UD Las Palmas currently leads the Segunda División, achieving their best opening in 27 years with two consecutive wins in the first two matches. The resonating rhetoric from the club's president, Miguel Ángel Ramírez, underscores a deep-rooted sentiment among the Canarian people. "We do not want to be Moroccan; we will never be Moroccan. We will always rebel and defend our territory as Canarian and Spanish," he passionately asserted.
Ramírez, a high-ranking executive, elaborated on the tactical approach taken when entering Ceuta via Tetuan, deliberately downplaying the club's participation in a solidarity protest regarding the ongoing immigration challenges faced by the region. He emphasized the sensitivity of Canarians towards immigration, recalling that the islands have faced such issues long before Ceuta and Melilla. "We Canarians are fed up with receiving immigrants. We welcome them with kindness and provide for them, which incurs significant costs for the state," he stated, highlighting the altruistic nature of the club's engagements with grassroots football initiatives rather than any business dealings with Morocco.
In a bold statement, Ramírez addressed accusations of cowardice directed at the club and denied any financial ties to Moroccan sponsors. "Let them call us cowards... Let them say that the president of Las Palmas has business dealings in Morocco: it is false. We do not receive or earn a euro from Morocco or any Moroccan sponsor. We are Spaniards, fiercely loyal to Spain, and we defend our Canarian territory as if it were Ceuta or Melilla... It makes no difference to me if it’s Sánchez, PSOE, or PP. I don’t care if Morocco claims that the Canaries belong to them. We are Canarians and Spaniards, and if we must take to the streets, we will. If a mobilization is needed to explain to Morocco that we are part of Spain, we will lead that mobilization," he declared passionately.
In response to critics questioning UD Las Palmas's tactics, Ramírez did not hold back, labeling them as "undesirable." This visceral and sensitive approach towards the 'Canarian cause' has been evident in his public appearances and interviews. He further warned that if attention is not directed towards the Canaries, the islands could risk becoming a colony or, worse, a detention center for immigrants. "In the Canaries, we must vote for Canarians to represent us in Madrid and defend our interests," he insisted during a recent appearance on AgostiniPodCast.
As the team prepares for their upcoming match against Girona, known for its Catalan independence sentiments and the birthplace of political figure Carles Puigdemont, Ramírez's patriotic fervor is more pronounced than ever. The match is scheduled to kick off at 20:30 hours at Montilivi, and the anticipation is palpable as the team looks to continue its strong performance.
