Protest Against Racism and a Call for Sovereignty
In a powerful display of solidarity and national pride, a banner emblazoned with the message, "History cannot be denied! Ceuta forever belongs to us," was raised at dawn on August 5th on the kasbah of Agadir Oufella. This event was organized by the Ultras Imazighen, a fervent supporter group of Hassania d’Agadir (HUSA). The phrase, translated into French as "L’histoire ne peut être niée ! Sebta nous appartient pour toujours," serves not only as a rallying cry against racism associated with the Spanish far-right but also as an assertion of Moroccan sovereignty over the city of Ceuta.
The Ultras Imazighen framed their action as a direct response to the racism and violence perpetrated by Spanish far-right activists against young Moroccans who had recently crossed the border into Ceuta and Melilla illegally. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska noted on August 4th that approximately 70,000 of these individuals had returned to Morocco, emphasizing that no prior reports had anticipated such a significant influx. This crisis overwhelmed local services, prompting Madrid to deploy police and military personnel and leading to tragic incidents where several individuals lost their lives while attempting to reach the city by sea.
Moreover, tensions escalated in Melilla as Spanish authorities closed the Beni Ansar border post following a collective attempt by hundreds of migrants to enter. In the subsequent days, far-right activists and propagandists traveled to Ceuta, delivering hostile rhetoric towards migrants. However, local residents openly rejected their presence and condemned their racism, which led to some activists being escorted out by police for their safety.
