UN Tourism Organization Headquarters Set to Move Closer to Morocco

New Developments in Tourism Collaboration

In a recent government meeting presided over by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, the Moroccan cabinet reviewed a pivotal headquarters agreement between the Moroccan government and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This agreement, signed in Marrakech on January 28, 2025, establishes a thematic office focused on innovation within the tourism sector in Africa, with its operational base located in Morocco.

Furthermore, the cabinet examined a second agreement regarding the financial and administrative arrangements for this thematic office, which was signed in Segovia on May 29, 2025. This agreement, along with Project Law No. 030.26, which seeks to approve both agreements, was presented by the Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, Social Economy, and Solidarity, on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Cooperation.

The cabinet's session also saw the approval of Project Law No. 27.26, which amends Law No. 17.04 concerning the pharmaceuticals and pharmacy code, presented by the Minister of Health and Social Protection. According to a statement from the Ministry of Relations with Parliament, the law aims to enhance Morocco's healthcare system and ensure the quality and safety of pharmaceuticals and health products, aligning national pharmaceutical standards with internationally recognized benchmarks.

Strengthening National Health Systems

The proposed legislation is intended to bolster the role of the Moroccan Agency for Medicines and Health Products, particularly in areas of licensing, market surveillance, inspections, and pharmacovigilance, thereby ensuring public health protection and improving access to medications.

Additionally, the cabinet discussed and approved a draft decree concerning the status of medical, pharmaceutical, and dental students undergoing training in healthcare institutions, taking into account the various observations made during deliberation. The government also approved a draft decree outlining the responsibilities of judges and the selection process for judges of communication, aimed at enhancing judicial cooperation between Morocco and foreign nations.

This initiative reflects the growing importance of the role of judges in facilitating international technical cooperation programs and strengthening partnerships, while also promoting openness and communication in various legal and judicial domains.

In summary, these recent agreements and legislative measures underscore Morocco's commitment to enhancing its healthcare and tourism sectors, promoting innovation, and fostering international collaboration in various fields.
